Visitor Information:
The National Tourist Office is in Palma at Plaça Reyna
2 (tel. 97-171-22-16). For more information and tourist travel
guides you can visit the office from Monday to Friday from
9am to 8pm, and Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
When to travel:
The islands enjoy a temperate, Mediterranean climate with
maximum temperatures not excessive, even in high summer and
winter with mild and dry days and temperatures below zero.
So you can travel to Plama any time of the year, though winters
and autumn are the perfect time for you to plan a trip to
the marvelous island.
Transportation:
In Palma, you can get around the Old Town and the Paseo on
foot. Otherwise, you can make limited use of taxis for getting
around Palma or use one of the buses that cut across the city.
Out on the island, you will have to depend mainly on buses
or rented cars for transportation.
Food & Drink:
If you enjoy eating, treat your taste buds with the varied
local cuisine including a wide selection of seafood and pork
dishes, Mahón cheeses from Menorca, numerous locally
grown fruits and vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, try
some of the Mallorcan ensaimada (light, sweet pastry roll),
or dine on Ibizan flao, graixonere de peix, tumbet, escaldums
of chicken, sobresada, Mallorcan soups, and mayonnaise, the
famous culinary invention from Menorca.
The islands have plenty of good wines and aromatic liqueurs,
such as palo, which is made from locally grown St John’s
bread (carob beans) and frigola. Imported alcoholic and soft
drinks are also widely available.
Nightlife:
Dance to the music playing at the numerous nightclubs and
discos and some with open-air dance floors overlooking the
sea, floorshows, live bands, and orchestras. For all those
movie freaks, they can make themselves comfortable in the
best cinemas halls and sophisticated theatres, concerts and
art exhibitions. Approximately 18km (11 miles) west of Palma,
in Magaluf, there is an elegant casino with a large restaurant.
Shopping:
On the Balearic Islands, there is a strong tradition of artistry,
so be ready to shell out some dough. You can shop for elegant
furniture, ethnic hand embroidered works, hand painted ceramics,
carved olive-wood panels, wrought ironwork, glassware, items
made from raffia and palm leaves, handmade shoes, the famous
pearls made in Mallorca and other costume jeweler from Menorca.
Shopping hours are from Mon-Sat 0900-1300 and 1630-1930.
