Alcazaba
La Alcazaba, a major landmark of the city is situated
just a few distance from the Plaza de Aduana. This fortress
dates back to the 700s, although much of the structure belongs
to the mid 11th century. It was the residence of Ferdinand
and Isabella soon after they reconquered the city.
The view of the city from there is among the most panoramic
on the Costa del Sol.
A small palace within the outskirts is the home of the Archaeological
Museum and just below the entrance to the Alcazaba there are
ruins of an amphitheatre dating from Roman times.
Castillo de Gibralfaro
The magnificent fortress lies on the hill overlooking Malaga
and the Mediterranean coast And the building dates back to
the beginning of the 14th century and is said to have been
built by Yusef 1 of Granada on a former Phoenician site and
lighthouse from which the castle's name was derived - gebel-faro
(rock of the lighthouse).
It has an interesting story to go by; the castle was once
a site of a three-month cordon by the citizens of Malaga against
the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella and this ended
when hunger led to capitulation, and eventually Ferdinand
occupied the site while his queen took up residence in the
town. All that remains of this famous monument today is the
series of solid walls which rise royally among dense woods
of pines and eucalyptus.
Cathedral
The notable 17th century Cathedral, stalled with
mahogany and cedar wood was designed by Luis Ortiz and loosely
interpreted as one-armed woman. The interior has influences
of the rebirth and elaborate styles. Pedro de Mena, one of
Spain's most celebrated wood-carvers of the time finely carved
statues of the saints behind each stall making it appear magnificent.
Adjoining the cathedral is the Iglesia del Sagrano a famous
mosque, having an unusual rectangular shape. The interior
is richly ornamented and its main altar features a magnificent
16th century retable.
The cathedral suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War.
However, it remains vast and impressive, reflecting changing
styles of interior architecture. Its most notable attributes
are the richly ornamented choir stalls by Ortiz, Mena, and
Michael.
The cathedral has been declared a national monument.
Picasso House-Museum
A well-told tale narrates the birth of Picasso: In
October 1891, when the artist was born, he was unable to draw
breath until his uncle blew cigar smoke into his lungs. Rumor
had it; this rather harsh entry into the world had any effect
on his work. However one thing that cannot be denied is the
effect he had on the world. He was born in a five-story building
in the heart of Malaga’s historic quarter; this is where
he spent the first 17 months of his life.
The house is now turned into a museum, with about 200 works
on display. The museum mounts monthly exhibitions featuring
avant-garde works from Picasso's time.
All through the year there is a permanent exhibition of Picasso
engravings entitled "Le Chants des Morts" on show.
Another exhibition of engravings by Picasso to illustrate
the book "Carmen" by Merimee is on show on the first
floor. The Museum is open during the summer Monday to Sunday
mornings between 10.00 and 14.00 and Monday to Saturday evenings
between 18.00 and 21.00. During the winter months it is open
Monday to Sunday mornings from 10.00 to 14.00 and Monday to
Saturday evenings from 18.00 to 20.00.
