The small town of Knock, located in County Mayo,
is one of the most attractive areas of southern Ireland. The town
has an implausible scenery and enchanting coastline and for that
reason Knock is a great place to visit with some excellent attractions
and a rich history.
Knock is famous because the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, and St John
were witnessed to have appeared there in 1879, and since has hosted
many important religious figures and events.
While you travel to County Mayo, the Church of the Apparition where
the Virgin and the two saints appeared is a must see place. Statues
ornamenting the church’s original gable wall produce a construction
of the vision. The church was extended to accommodate the massive
crowds that gather in Knock, especially in the month of May and
August 15.
Another attraction to mull over when in town is to visit the Knock
Folk Museum, which displays the beautiful and authentic artifacts.
In nearby Castle bar, there is the National Museum of Country Life
with its exhibits on country life. Further, down the north of County,
you can visit Ballina the remains of two religious sites, the Rosserk
Friary and the Moyne Abbey. There is also a Fr. Peyton Memorial
Center memorializing the man who spent his life advocating the importance
of prayer.
If you are traveling during mid-July, you can try to catch the Ballina
Street Festival.
