Geneva situated at the southwestern end of Lac Leman lake is said
to be the most sophisticated city of Switzerland. Geneva covered
with by the undulated hills rising against a backdrop of mountains
with the river running down the city gives a soothing glimpse.
The city centre is sited on both shores, with the main railway station
and the suburbs to the north of the river and the Old Town (Vieille
Ville) to the south of the river.
Geneva's international character makes it an ideal place for cultures
to mix in a tolerant broad-based environment. The people are open-minded,
accepting each other's philosophies, nationalities and creeds,
The city, often referred as city of wealth by stealth, is also a
major banking centre, being highly efficient; it plays a significant
role in the manufacture of watches, scientific instruments, jewellery,
and foodstuffs.
Defining early moments, Geneva had become a prominent city for olden
day heroes and figures, starting with Julius Caesar who, in 58 BC,
made Geneva into a border post, a shelter for Jean Calvin and many
more.
Today, Geneva has become the city of peace. The Old Town with its
historical streets and buildings, the museums and monuments recall
Geneva's rich past, but also illustrate the creativity and cultural
potential of today's city. Definitely multi-ethnic, Geneva now has
approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Visitors love to sink into the
rich bygone of Geneva.
